To the left is the blackbox theater set I designed for Answers by Tom Topor. This short play presents three characters: two bully cops, and a helpless, confused, and terrified suspect in a 1970's interrogation room in New York City.

I chose an Expressionist approach in my design, seating the suspect at a desk merely inches tall on a cramped stage, while all his other surroundings intimidate him with their larger-than-life size. The atmosphere is rough and uncomfortable, with the angular stage made of concrete and asphalt, two contradictory architectural styles of the past era featured on one wall, and imposing silhouettes of New York City landmarks on the other wall, including a Statue of Liberty warped at her core.

Prohibition-era Speakeasy

The following project was to create a "fantasy" room based on an earlier assignment to create a white model of our bedroom. I chose to create a speakeasy from the Prohibition era, complete with Art Deco furniture, modernist art, traditional wood trim, and mirrors.

This room was designed with several security features to hide the purpose of the room. First, the only entrance to the room is via a hidden door behind a bookcase. If this hidden door is discovered, a wall on a track either seals off the entrance to the sitting area in order to make it seem like a mere wood-lined closet has been discovered, or the wall slides over to seal off the bar and reveal a perfectly innocent sitting room. Furthermore, there are hidden doors in the furniture to hide drinks in the event of an untimely discovery.
